Family Betrayal - Mark 13:12

Mark wrote how Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately. Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And when you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be you not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues you shall be beaten: and you shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And the gospel must first be published among all nations. But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what you shall speak, neither do you premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak you: for it is not you that speak, but the Holy Ghost”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twelve of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son” where we read:

Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son;

and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.

The verse reads, “Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son;” Mark began with the words, “now the brother” or “moreover and male siblings who are born of the same two parents or of the same mother or father” “shall betray the brother” which means “will give over, deliver treacherously, punish, scourge and commit their own male sibling who is born of the same two parents or of the same mother or father” “to death” or “”to the separation of the soul and body by which the life on earth is ended” “and the father” which refers to “and the male ancestor and progenitor” “the son” or “the father's own male offspring and child”. Mark shared how Jesus said the times in which He is speaking would have family members such as “brothers betraying brothers” and “fathers betraying sons” within it.

The verse goes on to say, “and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. Mark continued with the words, “and children” which means “and the offspring and progeny” “shall rise up against their parents” or “will raise themselves in opposition and attack toward their ancestors and progenitors”, “and shall cause them” which means “and will make their parents” “to be put to death” or “be killed, mortified, rendered extinct and destroyed”. Mark shared how Jesus said people's own “children” would “betray” them and be the reason they were killed.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus proclaimed that “family members” will “betray” one another when the time of the end comes. We may not be able to imagine “brothers” betraying “brothers”, “fathers” betraying their “sons” or “children” betraying their “parents”, but there will be those who are “Christians” who will be “delivered up” by their non-Christian family members. Many of these who are “betrayed” will be “beaten, suffer and die”. God the Father knows these things, and Jesus warned of them. God the Father desires to give “everlasting life” to every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and though they may go through difficult times as they are “betrayed” by their families, God will have an “everlasting” reward waiting for them with Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
