The Rejected Cornerstone - Mark 12:10

Mark wrote how Jesus, “began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and dug a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty. And again he sent unto them another servant;and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled. And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. Having yet therefore one son, his well- beloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others”, and in chapter twelve and verse ten of his book, Mark shared how Jesus refers to the prophecy that says, “the stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner” where we read:

And have you not read this scripture;

The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

The verse reads, “And have you not read this scripture; Mark began with the words, “and have you not read” which means “and had the Pharisees and Herodians not distinguished between, recognized, known accurately or acknowledged” “this scripture” or “the certain portion of Holy Scripture to which Jesus will refer”. Mark shared how Jesus challenged the “religious leaders” as to whether or not they had “read” and “acknowledge” the following “scripture” He quoted.

The verse continues, The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: Mark added the words, “the stone” which means “the building rock” “which the builders rejected” or “that the constructors and house-builders disapproved, repudiated and disallowed” “is become the head” which means “has happened, arisen, appeared and been made the supreme, chief and prominent” “of the corner” or “pertaining to the external angle and internal corner”. Mark shared how the primary stone upon which the whole building was aligned and set was previously “rejected” by the “builders”, but was actually the chief “cornerstone”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the “chief cornerstone” being “rejected” by those who constructed the building only later to find out it was the “primary stone” upon which the building was built. (See Psalm 118:22-23 and Isaiah 28:16). Jesus was the main “stone” upon which the entire Kingdom of God would be built, and although He was “rejected”, suffered and died for the sins of the whole world, He is the only means to man's salvation. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who take the time to examine Jesus' life will realize His “rejection” by men was only further proof that He is indeed the Messiah of God and “Savior” of men.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “this was the Lord's doing” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
