When Shall These Things Be? - Mark 13:4

Mark wrote how Jesus, “sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately” the following question, and in chapter thirteen and verse four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus' four disciples asked Him, “Tell us, when shall these things be?” where we read:

Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

The verse reads, “Tell us, when shall these things be?” Mark began with the words, “Tell us” or “speak and say to we four disciples”, “when shall these things be” or “at what time and moment will the things they were just speaking about concerning the temple come into being”? Mark shared how “Peter, James, John and Andrew” wanted to know the timing of the “stones” not being “left upon another”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? Mark added the words, “and what shall be the sign” which means “and what will be the mark, token, indication or signal” “when all these things” or “at what time and moment each, every, the whole and everything this is to happen” “shall be fulfilled” which means “will come together, finish, be complete and accomplished”. Mark shared how the four disciples of Jesus desired to know what the “signal” and “timing” would be for all the “things” Jesus discussed would come to pass.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples were interested in the “sign” and the “timing” for all Jesus told them. There was to be a number of events that would take place according to Jesus, and when His disciple heard “one stone would not be left upon another” that were used to construct the temple in Jerusalem, “Peter, James, John and Andrew” wanted to know when this would happen. God has His timing for everything, and all events shall be according to His Divine plan. God's plan for the salvation of people was to send His Son Jesus to die for their sins so they may live with Him “forever and ever”. Those who are wise will leave the “signs” and “timing” up to God, and put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus throughout the remainder of their lives on earth.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “Take heed lest any man deceive you:”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
