Jesus Gathers His Elect - Mark 13:27

Mark wrote how Jesus speaking of future events said, in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he has chosen, he has shortened the days. And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not. For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take you heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light. And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds”, where we read:

And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds,

from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

The verse reads, “And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, ...” Mark began with the words, “and then” or “and at that time” “shall he send” which means “the Son of man will dismiss, dispatch and appoint” “his angels” or “the Son of man's messengers and envoys”, “and shall gather together” which means “and will collect, assemble and bring together” “his elect” which refers to “the Son of man's chosen, selected and picked out ones” “from the four winds” or “from the four principal directions of the earth or from the east, west, north and south”. Mark shared how the “Son of man” who is Jesus will “assemble” His “chosen ones” from every direction throughout the earth.

The verse continues, “... from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Mark added the words, “from the uttermost part” which means “apart and separate from the farthest and extreme locations” “of the earth” or “which are throughout the whole world” “to the uttermost part” which means “apart and separate from the farthest and extreme locations” “of heaven” or “belonging to the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it”. Mark shared how Jesus will “assemble” all His “chosen ones” from the “farthest” place on “earth” and “in heaven”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we discover that Jesus will “collect and assemble” those who have put their faith and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. He knows who they are, and at this time of cataclysmic events upon the earth and in the heavens, Jesus will appear in the “clouds” and “gather together” His own. God desires for everyone to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus, and those who yield their lives to Him will be a part of this “chosen” group of people. Those who do not will continue upon the earth and go through the most horrific time the world has ever known.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “Now learn a parable of the fig tree”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
