How is Jesus David's Son? - Mark 12:37

Mark wrote how, “Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus says, “David therefore himself called him Lord; and how is he then his son?” where we read:

David therefore himself called him Lord; and how is he then his son?

And the common people heard him gladly.

The verse reads, “David therefore himself called him Lord; and how is he then his son?” Mark began with the word, “David” which means “beloved and was the second king of Israel” “therefore himself” or “then, wherefore and these things being so David's own self” “called him Lord” which means “affirmed, maintained and mentioned that his son was his one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”: “and how is he then” or “and in what manner and likeness is the Lord” “his son” which means “David's offspring and progeny”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned the people as to how King David could call his son his Lord?

The verse continues, “And the common people heard him gladly. Mark added the words, “and the common people” which means “and the large crowd of human beings both male and female” “heard him” or “were endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceived, were attentive to and understood Jesus” “gladly” which means “sweetly or with pleasure”. Mark shared how the multitude of people “listened” to Jesus with “pleasure”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus continue to share from Psalm 110 as He questioned the people concerning the “scribes” teaching about the Messiah. Because the patriarch of the family was most regarded in their culture, no one would ever call their own son, Lord. Yet, King David did. Jesus Christ descended from the lineage of David, and He is the Christ or Messiah sent from God. Though Jesus came physically through the line of David, He was born of the virgin Mary and conceived by the Holy Spirit (See Luke 1:35), therefore, though He was “David's Son”, He is the “Lord” of the world. David could call his son “Lord” because his son through lineage was the Messiah. God the Father desires to have a loving personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they recognize, believe and trust in Him for the Lord that He is, they shall not only know Him as “Savior” but also receive everlasting life from Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “beware of the scribes” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
