Seven Husbands Dead with No Seed - Mark 12:22

Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-two of his book, Mark shared how the Sadducees told Jesus, “and the seven had her, and left no seed” where we read:

And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.

The verse reads, “And the seven had her, and left no seed: Mark began with the words, “and the seven” which means “and all seven brothers” “had her” or “married the woman”, “and left no seed” which means “and had no children with her”. Mark shared how all seven brothers married the woman in sequence after their preceding brother died, and not one of them had children by her.

The verse continues, last of all the woman died also. Mark added the words, “last of all” which means “finally and in the end” “the woman died also” or “the woman who married all seven brothers expired, breathed her last and perished”. Mark shared how the “woman” also “died” who married each of the seven brothers without having any children with them.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we are told more of this story presented to Jesus by the “Sadducees”. Seven brothers married one woman and had no children by her. The woman also died, and now the dilemma which will be presented by these “religious leaders” is “whose wife will she be in the resurrection”? Jesus knows all things, and though the “Sadducees” believed they had Jesus boxed in for an answer, we shall see that He answers them wisely. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and only when a person humbles themselves and yields their life to Him will they enjoy an “age abiding eternal life” with God.

Next time Mark shares how the Sadducees ask Jesus, “in the resurrection therefore … whose wife shall she be of them?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
