The God of the Living - Mark 12:27

Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus says, “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living” where we read:

He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: you therefore do greatly err.

The verse reads, “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: Mark began with the words, “He is not the God” which means “God is not the Godhead and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “of the dead” or “”, “but the God” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover the Godhead and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “of the living” or “belonging to people who are alive, active and blessed”. Mark shared how Jesus declared that “God” is the God of those who are alive and active.

The verse goes on to say, you therefore do greatly err. Mark continued with the words, “you therefore” which means “you Sadducees then, wherefore and these things being so” “do greatly err” or “are lead astray, deceived, fallen from the truth and roaming in sin”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “Sadducees” were “deceived and fallen from the truth” because they did not believe in the resurrection.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus instructed not only the “Sadducees” concerning the “resurrection from the dead”, but also anyone who reads His words. God is the “God of the living”, and after people “die”, they go on to live with Him if they have put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man comes to the Father, but by me” (See John 14:6), and those who are wise will not only believe Jesus' words, but also know this was His purpose for coming to the Earth - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Let all who read these words understand and believe.

Next time Mark shares how one of the scribes asks Jesus, “Which is the first commandment of all?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
