Watch Because You Know Not the Hour - Mark 13:35

Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take you heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-five of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes”, where we read:

Watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes,

at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning:

The verse reads, “Watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes, ...” Mark began with the words, “Watch you therefore” or “Jesus disciples be sleepless, keep away, be circumspect, attentive and ready then, wherefore and on account of this”: “for you know not” which means “because, since and on account that Jesus' disciples are not aware and have not perceive, notice, discern and discover” “when the master of the house” or “at the time and moment the one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding concerning the abode, habitation and dwelling place” “comes” which means “arises and appears”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples to “be alert” because they did not know when the “owner and possessor” of the “dwelling place” will appear.

The verse goes on to say, “... at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning: Mark continued with the words, “at even” which means “at the evening time which is around sunset”, “or at midnight” which refers to “the middle of the nighttime”, “or at the cock-crowing” which means “or at the third watch of the night when the rooster crows”, “or in the morning” which refers to “the fourth watch of the night from three o'clock in the morning until six o'clock approximately”. Mark shared how Jesus said the timing for the “return” of the “master of the house” might be in the evening time, in the middle of the night or early in the “morning”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus did not specifically speak of the timing of His return. His disciples were to be aware that He could come back at sunset, midnight or at sunrise. In other words, the “servants” of the Lord Jesus were to “pray, be alert and watching” at all times as well as continue in their business and serving with an awareness of His imminent return. God wants every person to believe and trust in His Son Jesus, and as they align themselves with Him, they should “work” and “watch” as they serve the Lord in the world.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells His disciples why they are to “Watch”, “lest he find you sleeping”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
