Will He Find You Sleeping? - Mark 13:36

Mark wrote how Jesus declared to His disciples, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take you heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus warned His disciples to watch lest, “he find you sleeping”, where we read:

Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

The verse reads, “Lest coming suddenly ...” Mark began with the words, “Lest coming” or “unless appearing and returning” “suddenly” which means “unexpectedly”. Mark shared how Jesus presented a condition toward His “unexpected” return.

The verse continues, “... he find you sleeping. Mark added the words, “he find you” which means “the master of the house or Jesus Himself discover and observe Jesus' disciples” “sleeping” or “dropping off in slothful sleep”. Mark shared how Jesus said His disciples should “watch” because if not, the master would return and find them “asleep”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted His disciples to be “watching” for His return. He does not want people to be “unaware” when He comes back. He desires for them to yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” so they will be looking for Him. When they submit their lives to Him, they are to “pray, serve and watch” while they wait because His return is imminent and will arrive unexpectedly.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “what I say to you I say to all, Watch”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
