Neither Marrying or Being Given in Marriage - Mark 12:25

Mark wrote how, “Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-five of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage” where we read:

For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage;

but are as the angels which are in heaven.

The verse reads, “For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; Mark began with the words, “for when” which means “because, since and on account that at the time and moment” “they shall rise” or “the seven brothers and the woman are resurrected and risen” “from the dead” which means “from being deceased, breathing their last, lifeless, destitute of life and inanimate”, “they neither marry” or “the seven brothers and the woman do not and in no way take anyone to be their wife or husband”, “nor are given in marriage” which means “no and in no way are they espoused or betrothed to be wedded people”. Mark shared how Jesus said “marrying” and being “given in marriage” exist no longer after people have died and risen from the “dead”.

The verse goes on to say, but are as the angels which are in heaven. Mark continues with the words, “but are as the angels” which means “nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover people exist as the heavenly messengers of God” “which are in heaven” or “who exist in the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Mark shared how Jesus said people will exist like God's “angels” after they are “resurrected” from the dead.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we learn an interesting concept presented by Jesus. “Marriage”, as these “Sadducees” presented in their story, will no longer exist after people are “risen” from the “dead”. In heaven, there is no “marriage” nor is anyone “giving” their “sons or daughters” to be married. Some may be glad for this idea, and others may have sorrow. However, we must remember Jesus is “God Almighty” in the flesh speaking, and His design for everything, including the relationships in Heaven, are far superior to any relationship on earth which we may think should continue to be. God's desire is to have a “family” of children who exist with Him forever, and by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, whatever He has planned for Heaven will be greater than our minds can conceive.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus refers to God saying, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
