Jesus' Enemies His Footstool - Mark 12:36

Mark wrote how, “Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus says, “David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.” where we read:

For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord,

Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.

The verse reads, “For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, ...” Mark began with the words, “For David himself” which means “because King David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel” “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “by the Holy Ghost” which means “through the means of the sacred, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially pure third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son”, “The LORD” or “the he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah” “said to my Lord” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to King David's One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to “King David's words” as He stated by the “Holy Spirit's power” that “The LORD” declared to “David's Lord” the following.

The verse goes on to say, ... Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool. Mark continued with the words, “sit you” which means “you Son of David be seated, fixed and established” “on my right hand” or “at the right hand of God's authority”, “till I make your enemies” which means “until the time when God will fix, establish, set forth and ordain that the Son of David's hated, odious and hostile opponents” “your footstool” or “the Son of David's stool upon which one puts His feet”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to Psalm 110 verse one as He shared the teaching of the “scribes” concerning the Messiah being the “Son of David” who would defeat all His enemies put them under His feet.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus presented the people within the temple with a question that was difficult for them to answer. As He referred to Psalm 110, Jesus knew those versed in the scriptures would know the prophesy concerning the Messiah said not only would He be “David's Son”, but He would also be “seated” at “God's right hand” until the time when the “enemies” of Jesus would be His “footstool”. The idea of a “footstool” was when a conquering warrior would put His foot upon the “neck” of the enemy, and there will be a time when those who are opposed to Jesus Christ and His ways will be “defeated”. The time for “salvation” from “sins” through Jesus Christ is now, otherwise one shall find themselves as James the apostle wrote, You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” (James 4:4)

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “David therefore himself called him Lord; and how is he then his son?” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
