What to Do with the Elders - Ezra 6:8

In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared how Darius said, Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place, and in chapter six and verse eight of Ezra, Ezra shared how Darius said, “I make a decree what you shall do to the elders” where we read,

Moreover I make a decree what you shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king's goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.

The verse reads, Moreover I make a decree what you shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God:” Ezra began with the words, “moreover I make a decree” which means “in addition and for this reason I, Darius, set, appoint and fix a judgment, discretion and command” “what you shall do” which means “concerning that which you, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shetharboznai, and your companions the Apharsachites, are to perform, produce, execute and carry out “to the elders of these Jews” or “toward the older, gray and hoary-headed one who belong to these Juhudaite or Judaite people of Israel” “for the building” which means “on behalf of the erecting, construction and establishing” “of this house of God” or “pertaining to the habitation, abode and dwelling place belonging to the Supreme Deity”. Ezra shared how “Darius” also gave a command concerning the older Jewish people of Israel about the construction of the temple of Jehovah God.

The verse continues, that of the king's goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.” Ezra added the words, “that of the king's goods” or “that from the royal ruler and leader's property and riches”, “even of the tribute” which means “indeed and also from the toll monies” “beyond the river” or “across the stream or Euphrates river”, “forthwith expenses” which means “with eager and speedy outlay, outgo and disbursement” “be given unto these men” or “be granted, bestowed and provided to the the older grey headed male human beings”, “that they be not hindered” which means “so they, the older men, are in no way or manner caused to stop, cease or halt the building”. Ezra shared how “Darius” commanded that his riches be distributed from the tolls across the Euphrates river and to be given to the older men quickly so they were in no way halted from building the temple.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra how “Darius” not only commissioned the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, but He also declared that resources from the tolls and his riches were to be speedily given to the older men so they would in no way be stopped from building. God was for the people of Israel, and their worship place would be reestablished. He used “Darius” to carry out His work, even as He will for us as we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. God will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and supply all our needs according to His riches in glory as we surrender our lives to Him and allow Him to furnish whatever we need. (See Philippians 4:19)

Next time Ezra shares how Darius says what to do with, “that which they have need of”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
