Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Sit you here, while I shall pray. And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy. And said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry you here, and watch. And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto you; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what you will. And he came, and found them sleeping, and said unto Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? could you not watch one hour? Watch you and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus “went away, and prayed, and spake the same words”, where we read:
And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
The verse reads, “And again he went away, and prayed, ...” Mark began with the words, “and again” which means “and another time” “he went away” or “Jesus departed and left”, “and prayed” which means “and made supplication, oration and worship to God”. Mark shared how Jesus left His three disciples and went to “pray again”.
The verse continues, “... and spake the same words.” Mark added the words, “and spake” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “the same words” or “the selfsame and like kind sayings and decrees”. Mark shared how Jesus said the same thing to His Father God about removing this “cup” from Him as He yielded His will to His Father God's.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus went back to the place where He was praying and said “the same words” to His Heavenly Father. This was the second time Jesus appealed to His Father to remove this “cup of tribulation” from Him if it was “possible”, and still, He yielded His “will” to God's. Jesus was wrestling between His divinity and His humanity as His “spirit” was willing to go through these horrific events, but His “flesh nature” did not want to endure them. Jesus submitted to God's plan so that every person who believes and trusts in Him would be saved, and those who are wise will consider everything He endured and yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares when Jesus, “returned, he found them asleep again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
