Jesus is Not Here – He is Risen - Mark 16:6

After Jesus died upon the cross and was buried, Mark wrote, “when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint” Jesus' body. Mark continued, “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted”, and in chapter sixteen and verse six of his book, Mark shared how the young man in a white garment said to the women, “you seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen” where we read:

And he said unto them, Be not affrighted: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified:

he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Be not affrighted: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified:” Mark began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and the young man clothed in a long white garment uttered, declared and proclaimed to the women”, “be not affrighted” which means “do not be terrified, alarmed, amazed and astounded”. He said, “you seek Jesus of Nazareth” or “you are looking for Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation who was from the village of Nazareth that comes from the Hebrew root word “branch”, “which was crucified” which means “who was palisade, driven down with stakes and hung on a cross until he was dead”. Mark shared how the young man within Jesus' tomb told the women not to be “afraid”, because He knew they were “looking for” Jesus who died upon the cross.

The verse goes on to say, “he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. Mark continue with the words, “he is risen” which means “Jesus was roused, awaken, lifted up and resurrected from the dead”; “he is not here” or “Jesus is not in the sepulcher”: “behold” which means “lo, look, see and consider” “the place where they laid him” which refers to “the location that Joseph and others lay Jesus' body”. Mark shared how the “young man” told the women that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and he encouraged them to look at the “place” where Jesus' body was initially “laid”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover what the young man, who was an “angel” (See John 20:12), encouraged the women not to be “afraid” because Jesus was “risen from the dead” and was no longer in the “sepulcher”. The “angel” told the women to “behold the place” where Joseph and those with him “laid” Jesus' body. Jesus was no longer there because He was risen from the dead and had overcome death. God planned for His Son Jesus to suffer death on the cross and to be resurrected from the dead. Now all who believe and trust in Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Jesus is risen, and He is risen indeed.

Next time Mark shares how the young man in a white garment instructs the women to, “go your way, tell his disciples and Peter”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
