Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned”, and in chapter sixteen and verse seventeen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “these signs shall follow them that believe”, where we read:
And these signs shall follow them that believe;
In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
The verse reads, “And these signs shall follow them that believe;” Mark began with the words, “And these signs” or “and the following marks, tokens and miracles” “shall follow them” which means “will accompany and be near the people” “that believe” or “who are persuaded, place confidence in and trusted” in Jesus. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples the following “miracles” would “accompany” people who trust in Him.
The verse continues, “In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” Mark added the words, “In my name” which means “within Jesus' name which includes everything that the name covers, including the thought or feeling which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” “shall they cast out devils” or “will those who align with Jesus' name throw and drive out evil spirits or messengers and ministers of the devil”; “they shall speak” which means “those who align with Jesus' name will utter, declare and proclaim” “with new tongues” or “with unprecedented, novel, uncommon and unheard of languages or dialects”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples that people who “believe” in Him will “drive out evil spirits” and “speak” with “unknown languages or dialects”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told His disciples “believers” they would be blessed with special “signs” or “miracles”, and they would “drive out evil spirits” and “speak” in languages previously unknown to them. These “miraculous acts” would demonstrate to others the “power” afforded to people who “believe” in Jesus, and when they observed these “signs”, they should respond by also “believing”. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through “belief” in His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, the “signs” Jesus spoke of will be granted to them.
Next time Mark shared how Jesus continued sharing the “signs” as He said, “they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
