Mark wrote how there, “came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty of his book, Mark shared how “they all forsook him, and fled”, where we read:
And they all forsook him, and fled.
The verse reads, “And they all forsook him, ...”. Mark began with the words, “and they all” which means “and each, every, the whole and everyone of Jesus' disciples” “forsook him” or “left and departed from Jesus”. Mark shared how every one of Jesus' disciples abandoned Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... and fled.” Mark continued the words, “and fled” which means “and ran away, vanished and escaped”. Mark shared how every one of Jesus' disciples abandoned Him and left Him to manage His assailants alone.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how the people who were the closest to Jesus “abandoned” Him when His time of arrest came. In other words, Jesus' disciples left Jesus to handle all His assailants by Himself. Jesus was alone, and only He would be able to suffer and die for the sins of mankind. Jesus is the Creator of the Universe including man, and He could have easily eliminated this entire crowd with a single word, however, He submitted to them because it would lead to the “salvation” of mankind. Those who are wise will search everything that happened to Jesus and realize He is the only One who can save them of their sins.
Next time Mark shares how “there followed him a certain young man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
