THE KING OF THE JEWS - Mark 15:26

Mark wrote how, “Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshiped him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-six of his book, Mark shared how there was a “superscription” written over Jesus, “THE KING OF THE JEWS” where we read:

And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The verse reads, “And the superscription of his accusation was written over, …”. Mark began with the words, “and the superscription” which means “and the inscription and title” “of his accusation was written over” or “pertaining to reason and cause for which Jesus was worthy of punishment which was delineated or formed in letters and inscribed”. Mark shared how there was an “inscription” “written” and placed over the head of Jesus as He hung upon the cross.

The verse continues, “... THE KING OF THE JEWS. Mark added the words, “THE KING” which means “the leader, prince, commander or lord” “OF THE JEWS” or “belonging to the people of the Jewish nation”. Mark shared how the “inscription” written proclaimed that Jesus was the “KING” of the Jewish people.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how there was a parchment written that declared Jesus to be the “KING OF THE JEWS”. Though the Jewish people there did not accept that He was their “King”, still the “title” given to Him was that He was “King” of them. God desires to be the “King” of everyone's life, and this is made possible by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. The “superscription” written and placed over Jesus' head, and people will accept it either now or in the future when He is declared to be “The King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords”. (See Revelation 19:16)

Next time Mark shares how “they crucified two thieves” with Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
