After Jesus died upon the cross and was buried, Mark wrote, “when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint” Jesus' body. Mark continued, “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he said unto them, Be not affrighted: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him”, and in chapter sixteen and verse seven of his book, Mark shared how the young man in the long white robe told the women, “go your way, tell his disciples and Peter” where we read:
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee:
there shall you see him, as he said unto you.
The verse reads, “But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee:” Mark began with the words, “But go your way” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover leave, depart and go from here”, “tell his disciples” which means “speak and say to Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “and Peter” or “and Peter whose name means a little stone or rock” “that he goes before you” which means “that Jesus proceeds and leads forth in advance of His disciples” “in Galilee” which refers to “the area of Galilee which means “circuit” and was the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel which was on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”. Mark shared how the “young man dressed in a white robe” told the women to “depart” from the gravesite and go “tell” Jesus' disciples, and in particular “Peter”, that Jesus will precede them to the “Galilee” area.
The verse continues, “there shall you see him, as he said unto you.” Mark added the words, “there you shall see him” which means “in Galilee Jesus' disciples would look upon Him”, “as he said unto you” or “even as Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”. Mark shared how the “young man dressed in white” also declared that Jesus said His disciples would “see him” even as Jesus told them in advance that they would.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see the direction given to the women by the “angel” in Jesus' tomb. He instructed them to “go tell” Jesus' disciples that they would “see” Him again in “Galilee” just like He told them in advance. The announcement of the resurrection of Jesus was followed by the pronouncement that His disciples would see Him in Galilee. Jesus desired to reveal Himself to His disciples after His resurrection, and He wants people to believe and trust in Him today. Those who are wise will carefully consider all the things concerning the resurrection of Jesus and submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how the women, “went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
