Mark wrote how the “high priests” and “religious leaders” captured Jesus and tried Him in the evening. They condemned Jesus to death, and “in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, You said it”, and in chapter fifteen and verse three of his book, Mark shared how “the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing” where we read:
And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
The verse reads, “And the chief priests accused him of many things:”. Mark began with the words, “and the chief priests” which means “and the high priests” “accused him” or “made accusations against and charged Jesus with offenses” “of many things” which means “with lots of different charges and crimes”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” known as the “high priests” brought many charges against Jesus like plaintiffs in a criminal trial.
The verse goes on to say, “but he answered nothing.” Mark added the words, “but he answered” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and Jesus responded, said and uttered” “nothing” or “not one thing or word”. Mark shared how Jesus did not attempt to defend Himself before Pilate.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “high priests” were persistent in their attempt to convict Jesus. Not only had they brought Jesus before the governing authority in their region, but now they made “accusation after accusation” against Him. Throughout this trial, Jesus said “not one word”. Isaiah the prophet wrote concerning the Messiah, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth” (See Isaiah 53:7). Jesus fulfilled this scripture as He did not answer or respond to their words. God so loves people that He allowed His Son Jesus to be subjected to this process, and although the “high priests” thought themselves to be right in accusing Jesus, they were only aligning with God's plan of “salvation” for man. Those who are wise will consider what Jesus did so they may be saved by yielding their lives to the One who did not have to say a word but demonstrated His love for them by His actions.
Next time Mark shares how “Pilate asked him again, saying, Answer you nothing?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
