What to Do with the King of the Jews - Mark 15:12

Mark wrote, “Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twelve of his book, Mark shared how Pilate asked the multitude, “What will you then that I shall do unto him whom you call the King of the Jews?” where we read:

And Pilate answered and said again unto them,

What will you then that I shall do unto him whom you call the King of the Jews?

The verse reads, “And Pilate answered and said again unto them, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And Pilate” which means “and the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified whose name means armed with a spear” “answered” or “responded and began to speak” “and said again” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed another time” “unto them” or “to the crowd who was observing Jesus' trial”. Mark shared how “Pilate” “responded” to the crowd with the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... What will you then that I shall do unto him whom you call the King of the Jews? Mark continued with the words, “what will you then” which means “what is it therefore that the crowd desires, craves, requires and demands” “that I shall do unto him” or “that Pilate should do to Jesus” “whom you call” which means “who the crowd affirms, mentions and speaks of as” “the King of the Jews” or “the leader, prince, commander and lord of the people from the Jewish nation as respects to birth, origin and religion”? Mark shared how Pilate asked the multitude who was gathered what they wanted him to do with Jesus.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Pilate capitulated to the crowd of people who were asking for “Barabbas” rather than Jesus. The crowd will answer Pilate's question in the next verse, but suffice it for now to understand that his question was in line with God's plan of “salvation” for mankind through Jesus. Zechariah chapter thirteen and verse six says, And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends”, and Jesus was to be rejected by those who were His own people within this crowd. God loves every person so much that He made this way available for them to “believe and trust” in His Son Jesus to be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God.

Next time Mark shares how the multitude, “cried out again, Crucify him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
