Mark wrote, “as Peter was beneath in the palace, there came one of the maids of the high priest. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And you also were with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seventy of his book, Mark shared how Peter, “denied it again” where we read:
And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilaean, and your speech agrees thereto.
The verse reads, “And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And he denied it again” which means “and Peter abnegated, abjured, did not accept, rejected and refused another time”. “And a little after” or “and a short, brief and small amount of time after the maid accused Peter”, “they that stood by” which means “the people who were standing around the porch area of the palace” “said again to Peter” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed another time to Jesus' disciple Peter whose name means a little rock or stone”. Mark shared how Peter “denied” knowing Jesus for the second time, and the people who were near him on the “porch” of the palace began to “say” the following words to him.
The verse continues, “... Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilaean, and your speech agrees thereto.” Mark added the word, “Surely” which means “truly, in reality and certainly” “you are one of them” or “you, Peter, are one of the disciples of Jesus”: “for you are a Galilaean” which means “because, since and on account that you, Peter, are native of Galilee”, “and your speech agrees thereto” or “and the dialect and mode of pronunciation resembles and is like the Galilaeans”. Mark shared how the people near the maid who accused Peter convincingly began to tell him that he was certainly one of Jesus' disciples because Peter was from “Galilee” and his “dialect” was like “Galilaeans”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover the second of Peter's three denials of Jesus. This time people around the “young female servant” chimed in and began to accuse Peter of being one of Jesus' disciples. Peter was from “Galilee” and his “dialect” was “Galilaean”, so the people were convinced that he was one of Jesus' disciples. We have seen the slow deliberate denial of Jesus by Peter, and though he thought himself to be brave and beyond “denying” Christ, he failed in weakness. Jesus knew this about Peter, and He continued His path toward being crucified not only for Peter's sins, but also for the sins of the whole world. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross so that every person may live with Him forever. Those who put their faith and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be saved from their sins even when they have “denied” Him like Peter. Those who are wise will receive Him today.
Next time Mark shares how Peter, “began to curse and swear, saying, I know not this man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
