The Veil Torn in Two - Mark 15:38

When Jesus was crucified, Mark wrote, “Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirty-eight of his book, Mark shared how, “the veil of the temple was rent in twain” where we read:

And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

The verse reads, “And the veil of the temple was rent in twain ...” Mark began with the words, “and the veil” or “and the curtain which covered the Holy of Holies” “of the temple” which means “within the sacred worship place in Jerusalem” “was rent in twain” or “was torn in two”. Mark shared how the curtain within the “sacred worship place” in Jerusalem was torn in two.

The verse continues, “... from the top to the bottom.” Mark added the words, “from the top” or “beginning with the upper place above” “to the bottom” which means “till it reached the downward part below”. Mark shared how the “tearing” of the “curtain” began at the “top” of it and ripped in a downward fashion until it reached the lowest part.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see a divine intervention in this “tearing” of the “temple” curtain. This curtain was “twenty cubits” or “thirty feet” wide, long and high. (See 1 Kings 6:20), and it was approximately four inches thick. The tearing of the “veil” which separated the Holy of Holies from the other portions of the temple symbolized the access to God that was given to mankind because of what Jesus did on the cross. Because Jesus died, all who believe and trust in Him may “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”. (See Hebrews 4:16)
