Mark wrote, “Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will you then that I shall do unto him whom you call the King of the Jews?”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirteen of his book, Mark shared how the multitude, “cried out again, Crucify him” where we read:
And they cried out again, Crucify him.
The verse reads, “And they cried out again, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And they cried out” which means “and the crowd shouted aloud, vociferated and spoke with loud voices” “again” or “another time”. Mark shared how the multitude shouted loudly another time.
The verse continues, “... Crucify him. Mark added the words, “Crucify” which means “drive down with stakes, palisade, destroy the flesh and power and extinguish completely” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Mark shared how the crowd yelled out that they wanted Jesus “crucified”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we discover the desire of the crowd of people who were gathered and watching Jesus be tried by Pilate. They wanted Jesus to be “hung on a cross” until He was dead. This horrific death developed by the Romans was used to torture and kill people who were criminals, and regardless of the tremendous suffering that accompanied “crucifixion”, the multitude was convinced it was the proper justice against Jesus. God knew this would be their desire, and because they needed to be “saved” from their sinful state, He allowed His Son Jesus to receive this desire of the crowd. God wants to have a relationship with every person, and He demonstrated His love toward everyone by allowing His Son Jesus to pay this price for their sins. Those who are wise will carefully consider what Jesus paid for their sins and repent and turn to Him to be forgiven and receive the promise of everlasting life with God.
Next time Mark shares how Pilate asked the multitude, “why, what evil has he done?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
