When Jesus was crucified, Mark wrote how, “Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom”, and in chapter fifteen and verse thirty-nine of his book, Mark shared how the centurion watching said, “Truly this man was the Son of God” where we read:
And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out,
and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
The verse reads, “And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “the centurion” which means “the captain of one hundred soldiers”, “which stood over against him” or “who was standing near and opposite to where Jesus was crucified”, “saw that he so cried out” which means “perceived, noticed and discerned that Jesus shouted aloud”. Mark shared how there was a “captain of one hundred soldiers” near to where Jesus was crucified who heard Him “cry out” with a “loud voice”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.” Mark continued with the words, “and gave up” or “and breathed out or expired”” “the ghost” which means “His spirit”, “he said” or “the centurion uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Truly” which means “verily and surely” “this man was the Son of God” or “this person was God's Son”. Mark shared how the “centurion” recognized that Jesus was indeed “God's Son”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover another person who recognized Jesus for who He really was. The “centurion” who was standing near the cross heard Jesus “cry out” and “breathe His last breath”, and he proclaimed that Jesus was indeed the “Son of God”. Jesus, who is God's Son”, endured these things because He desired to have every person to be in a relationship with His Father God. Those who believe and trust in Jesus as “God's Son” and the “Savior of the World” will be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Mark shares how, “there were also women looking on afar off”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
