Mark writing about Jesus shared, “in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, You said it. And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing”, and in chapter fifteen and verse four of his book, Mark shared how “Pilate asked him again … Answer you nothing?” where we read:
And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answer you nothing?
behold how many things they witness against you.
The verse reads, “And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answer you nothing?”. Mark began with the words, “and Pilate asked him again” which means “and the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified whose name means armed with a spear questioned and inquired of Jesus another time”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Answer you nothing” which means “do you, Jesus, respond without a word”? Mark shared how “Pilate” questioned Jesus again concerning His lack of response to the accusations presented by the “high priests”.
The verse continues, “behold how many things they witness against you.” Mark added the words, “behold how many things” which means “lo, look and consider the great number and massive amount of things” “they witness” or “the high priests testify and bring forth” “against you” which means “in opposition to Jesus”. Mark shared how Pilate referred to the “many things” the “high priests” testified against Jesus.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Pilate was amazed that Jesus did not defend Himself when the “high priests” brought so many accusations against Him. The prophet Isaiah wrote concerning the Messiah, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth” (See Isaiah 53:7), and Jesus fulfilled this scripture before Pilate and the religious leaders. God knew all these things would come to pass, and He allowed His Son Jesus to go through them so “salvation” could be offered to anyone who believes and trusts in Him. Those who are wise will yield their lives to the One who remained “silent” on their behalf.
Next time Mark shares how “Jesus yet answered nothing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
