Mark wrote after Jesus died and rose from the grave, “Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils”, and in chapter sixteen and verse ten of his book, Mark shared how Mary Magdalene, “went and told them that had been with” Jesus, where we read:
And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
The verse reads, “And she went and told them that had been with him, ...” Mark began with the words, “and she went” or “and Mary Magdalene left and departed” “and told them” which means “and brought tidings, word and report to Jesus' disciples” “that had been with him” or “who were alongside Jesus”. Mark shared how “Mary Magdalene” departed from Jesus and went to tell His disciples how He appeared to her.
The verse goes on to say, “... as they mourned and wept.” Mark continued with the words, “as they mourned” which means “during the time Jesus' disciples and followers lamented and grieved” “and wept” or “and bewailed, sobbed and cried aloud”. Mark shared how the “disciples and followers” of Jesus were “sobbing, grieving and crying aloud” because of Jesus' death.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we learn how “Mary Magdalene” responded to seeing Jesus. She departed from Him, and went to His disciples to let them know she saw Him. As she arrived to where Jesus' disciples were located, she spoke to them while they were “grieving” over Jesus' death. Because they had not seen Jesus, and did not yet believe what He told them about rising again, the “disciples and followers” of Jesus were in “mourning”. God wants people to believe in Him and His salvation plan for mankind through His Son Jesus. Those who submit their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their “sins” and be granted “everlasting life” with God. Let all who read these words see and believe.
Next time Mark shared, “when they heard that he was alive … believed not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
