Jesus Led to the High Priest - Mark 14:53

Mark wrote how there, “came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-three of his book, Mark shared how, “they led Jesus away to the high priests”, where we read:

And they led Jesus away to the high priest:

and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

The verse reads, “And they led Jesus away to the high priest:”. Mark began with the word, “and they led Jesus away” which means “and the captors carried off the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “to the high priest” or “to the chief priests”. Mark shared how the assailants who arrested Jesus took Him to the “chief priest”.

The verse continues, “and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. Mark added the words, “and with him” which means “and alongside the high priest” “were assembled” or “were gathered together, collected and convened” “all the chief priests” which refers to “each, every, the whole and everyone of the high priests” “and the elders” or “and the advanced in age, seniors, forefathers and members of the great council or Sanhedrin” “and the scribes” which means “and the men learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings who served as interpreters and teachers”. Mark shared how the remainder of the “religious leaders” known as the “elders and scribes” were “assembled” with the “high priests”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how the men who arrested Jesus took Him to the “high priest” and the remainder of the “religious leaders” were “gathered together” with them. This “lynch mob” was intentional in their attempt to discredit and devalue Jesus, and without their understanding, they were putting the Son of God on trial. The amazing part of these events is that Jesus knew the “religious leaders'” intentions, and He could have stopped them at any time. Because He loves people so much, Jesus endured all these things and permitted them to happen to Him. Those who consider this should examine themselves to be certain they align with God's plan for the salvation of mankind through His Son Jesus lest they find themselves like this “arresting mob” who thought they knew best for people.

Next time Mark shares how, “Peter followed him afar off”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
