After Jesus died on the cross and was buried, Mark wrote, “when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint” Jesus' body. “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he said unto them, Be not affrighted: You seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee: there shall you see him, as he said unto you”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eight of his book, Mark shared how the women, “went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher” where we read:
And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher;
for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.
The verse reads, “And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher;” Mark began with the words, “and they went out quickly” or “and the women left in a hurry, speedily and readily”, “and fled” which means “and escaped, ran away and vanished” “from the sepulcher” or “apart from the tomb or grave”. Mark shared how the women speedily vanished from the “grave” of Jesus.
The verse goes on to say “for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.” Mark continued with the words, “for they trembled” which means “because, since and on account that the women were quaking with fear and anxiety” “and were amazed” or “and had their minds thrown out of their normal states and were beside themselves”: “neither said they any thing” which means “and not one word concerning what they saw was uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to any man” or “to any other person whether male or female”. Mark shared the reason the women “fled” from Jesus' grave so quickly was because they were “quaking in fear” and did not say anything to anyone about what they saw.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how the women responded to the sight and direction of the “angel” within Jesus' grave. After they heard the words of this “young man clothed in a white garment”, they hurriedly left the place where Jesus was buried even as they were “trembling” in “fear” and would not speak to anyone about what they saw. The resurrection of Jesus caused these women to “quake” not only from what they saw, but also from what they heard. God loves when people respond to Him in a manner that “shakes” them in awe and reverence of His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, He brings a peace and joy to them is unlike any other they may seek or find.
Next time Mark what happened, “when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
