The Fleeing Young Man Mark 14:52

Mark wrote how there, “came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-two of his book, Mark shared how the young man, “left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked”, where we read:

And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

The verse reads, “And he left the linen cloth, ...”. Mark began with the word, “and he left” which means “and the young man departed and separated from” “the linen cloth” or “the light and loose garment worn at night over a naked body”. Mark shared how the “young man” (who was Mark) departed from his “light outer garment”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and fled from them naked. Mark continued with the words, “and fled” which means “and ran or escaped safely out of danger” “from them naked” or “apart and separated unclothed from the young men who grabbed him”. Mark shared how the “young man” ran away “naked” from the ones who attempted to capture him.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see the impulse of the “young man” who was following Jesus as he was to going to be “seized”. Though some of the “young men” who were with the assailants of Jesus grabbed him, this “young man”, Mark, “ran away naked” from them. Now Jesus was alone with His “assailants”, and even the one writing this book was gone away from Him. Jesus endured all these things for the sake of mankind because people were separated from God by their sins. As everyone else abandoned Jesus, including this young man, Jesus purposed to follow and obey what God His Father intended for Him. Those who are wise will examine Jesus' determination, and rather than “run away” from Him, they should cling to Him with all their power and might.

Next time Mark shares how, “they led Jesus away to the high priests”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
