Mark wrote how those who captured Jesus led Him, “away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-seven of his book, Mark shared how, “there arose certain, and bare false witness against him”, where we read:
And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
The verse reads, “And there arose certain, ...”. Mark began with the words, “and there arose” which means “and there were standing and raising up” “certain” which refers to “particular people”. Mark shared how some “specific people” stood in the presence of the religious leaders.
The verse continues, “...and bare false witness against him, saying,” Mark added the words, “and bare false witness” which means “and uttered falsehoods and untrue testimony” “against him” or “in opposition to Jesus”, “saying” or uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Mark shared how the people who came forward presented “untrue testimonies” in opposition to Jesus by “declaring” what will be presented in the next verse.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how “witnesses” continued to rise against Jesus before the “religious leaders”. Because they could not find credible testimony against Jesus, the people who stood before the “leaders” began to give “falsehoods” in opposition to Him. Jesus was in the midst of His created people as they “were standing” with intentions of finding “witness” that would allow them to kill Him. God loves people so much that He sent His Son Jesus to endure these lies, and His desire is to “save” people from their “sins” so they may live forever with Him. Those who are wise will consider all that Jesus did for them and believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” as the best response to His wonderful deeds.
Next time Mark shares how the witnesses say, “we heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
