Seeking Witness Against Jesus - Mark 14:55

Mark wrote how those who captured Jesus led Him, “away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-five of his book, Mark shared how, “the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus”, where we read:

And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death;

and found none.

The verse reads, “And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death;”. Mark began with the words, “and the chief priests” which refers to “the high priests” “and all the council” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the Sanhedrin, the great council at Jerusalem which consisted of the seventy one members including the scribes, elders, prominent members of the high priestly families and the high priest and the president of the assembly” “sought for witness” which means “looked for, craved, required and demanded people testifying and giving report” “against Jesus” or “in opposition to Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “to put him to death” which means “to destroy, render extinct, kill and mortify Jesus”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” and their “high priests” “required and craved” witnesses to come forth “against” Jesus so they could “destroy” Him by putting Him to death.

The verse continues, “and found none. Mark added the words, “and found” which means “and discovered, saw, got knowledge of, acquired, obtained and procured” “none” or “not one and not any at all”. Mark shared how the “high priests and religious leaders” did not “find any” “witnesses” against Jesus that would be worthy of putting Him to death.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover the desire and intentions of these “religious leaders”. They wanted Jesus dead, and they were attempting to find “witnesses” that would allow Jesus to be put to death. Jesus threatened the “religious system” of which these men were in control, and because Jesus was “famous” among the people, they wanted Him gone. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and many times those who refuse to receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” attempt to “remove” Him from their lives and thoughts. Those who are wise receive Jesus and understand how everything He endured was for their benefit as well as anyone who will believe and trust in Him.

Next time Mark shares how, “many bare false witness against him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
