Mark wrote how those who captured Jesus led Him, “away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-six of his book, Mark shared how, “many bare false witness against him”, where we read:
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
The verse reads, “For many bare false witness against him, ...”. Mark began with the words, “For many” which means “because, since and on account that a lot of people” “bare false witness” or “uttered falsehoods in giving testimony and were untrue testifiers” “against him” which means “in opposition to Jesus”. Mark shared how a lot of people came forward who gave “untrue testimonies” concerning Jesus.
The verse goes on to say, “...but their witness agreed not together.” Mark continued with the words, “but their witness” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and the testimony and reports of those who came” “agreed not together” or “was not equal, similar or like each other”. Mark shared how the “testimonies” of the people who came against Jesus were not in concord with each other.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how these “witnesses” brought accusations against Jesus, but they didn't agree with one another. The attempt of these “religious leaders” to accuse Jesus of something worthy of death was feeble because they could not find credible “testimony”. Can we imagine the Son of God standing before men who were making up stories about Him as they one by one attempted to say something that would indite Him? Yet, Jesus stood there and allowed it. God demonstrates His love toward people in that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (See Romans 5:8), and Jesus showed His love and commitment to “save” people from their sins by enduring these lies. Let us be wise as we meditate upon what Jesus endured for the “salvation” of mankind, and if we have not submitted our lives to Him, let today be the day we yield.
Next time Mark shares how, “there arose certain, and bare false witness against him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
