Mark wrote, “Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them”, and in chapter fifteen and verse nine of his book, Mark shared how, “will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews?” where we read:
But Pilate answered them, saying, Will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
The verse reads, “But Pilate answered them, saying, ...”. Mark began with the words, “But Pilate” which means “the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified whose name means armed with a spear” “answered them” or “responded and began to speak to the crowd”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how “Pilate” responded to the crowd's request to do what they wanted by asking the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... Will you that I release unto you the King of the Jews?” Mark continues with the words, “will you” which means “do you, the crowd, desire, crave and want” “that I release unto you” or “that Pilate would set free and dismiss unto the crowd” “the King of the Jews” which means “the leader, prince, commander and lord of the land pertaining to the people who belong to the Jewish nation as respects to birth, origin and religion”. Mark shared how “Pilate” wanted to know if the crowd desired that he “set free” “Jesus” who was known as the “King of the Jews”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Pilate “responded” to the crowd's request concerning Jesus. Though he found nothing wrong with Jesus, the multitude persuaded “Pilate” to ask what they desired of him and whether they wanted Jesus to be released. God knew how this crowd would respond, and because He loves people so much, He allowed His Son Jesus to be the object of their pernicious desires. God wants to have a personal relationship with every person, and when they yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He not only will forgive their sins, but also align them with His Son Jesus rather than any other option available to them.
Next time Mark shares how Pilate, “knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
