Mark shared, “as Peter was beneath in the palace, there came one of the maids of the high priest. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And you also were with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew”, and in chapter fourteen and verse sixty-nine of his book, Mark wrote how “a maid saw him again, and began to say … this is one of them” where we read:
And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
The verse reads, “And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, ...”. Mark began with the words, “And a maid” which means “and a young girl or damsel who was a female slave” “saw him again” or “observed, notice, discerned and discovered Peter another time”, “and began to say to them” which means “and initiated and started to utter, declare and proclaim to the people” “that stood by” or “who were standing near the young maid”. Mark shared how another “young female servant” observed Peter and began to speak to the people who were around her saying the following words.
The verse continues, “... This is one of them.” Mark added the words, “This is” which means “Peter is” “one of them” or “a certain one of the disciples of Jesus”. Mark shared how the “maid” proclaimed that Peter was indeed one of Jesus' disciples.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how another “maid” observed Peter when he went to the “porch” area of the palace and disclosed who he was to the people who were gathered there. This is the set up for Peter denying that he knew Jesus again, and as predicted by Jesus, Peter would indeed fail another time. God knows people need “salvation” from their sinful ways, so He sent His Son Jesus to pay the price for their “sins” that they may live with Him throughout all eternity. Peter failed, and so does every person reading these words including the one who wrote them, and all are in need of Jesus as a personal “Savior and Lord” so they may have a relationship with His Father God.
Next time Mark shares how Peter, “denied it again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
