Mark wrote how there, “came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifty-one of his book, Mark shared how “there followed him a certain young man”, where we read:
And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body;
and the young men laid hold on him:
The verse reads, “And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body;”. Mark began with the word, “and there followed him” which means “and there went after Jesus” “a certain young man” or “a particular youthful male”, “having a linen cloth” which refers to “possessing and owning a light and loose garment worn at night over a naked body” “cast about his naked body” or “”. Mark shared how a “young man” “followed” after Jesus who was clothed with only a “linen cloth” wrapped around his naked body.
The verse continues, “... and the young men laid hold on him:” Mark added words, “and the young men” which means “and the youthful males among the crowd who was approaching Jesus to arrest Him” “laid hold on him” or “retained and restrained Jesus”. Mark shared how the “youthful males” who were part of the crowd who came to “arrest” Jesus grabbed the young man who was only clad in a “linen cloth”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how there was a “young man” wearing a “linen cloth” who happened to be where Jesus was, and when the arresting crowd noticed Him, the “young men” with the crowd grabbed the “certain young man”. Most Bible scholars identify this “young man” as Mark himself who wrote these words. Rather than writing, “I was there”, Mark referred to himself as a “certain young man”. Peter the apostle most likely dictated this book to Mark who gave this personal account of his presence during the time when Jesus was “seized”. This is just another example of how God provided detail after detail concerning His effort to save people from their sins through Hs Son Jesus. Those who are wise will consider all of these details and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how the young man, “left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
