When Jesus was crucified, Mark wrote how, “Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.” Mark continued, “There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome”, and in chapter fifteen and verse forty-one of his book, Mark shared about, “many other women which came up” where we read:
(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;)
and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
The verse reads, “(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;)” Mark began with the words, “(who also” or “the women even and indeed”, “when he was in Galilee” which means “at the time Jesus was in the area of Galilee which means circuit and was the name of a region of northern Palestine which is bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and the promontory of Carmel which is on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”, “followed him” or “proceeded after, joined as attendants and accompanied Jesus”, “and ministered unto him” which means “and served, attended and waited upon Jesus”). Mark shared how the “women” who “watched” Jesus on the cross from “afar off” were His “attendants” who “served” Jesus in His ministry.
The verse continues, “... and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.” Mark added the words, “and many other women” or “a large group of other females” “which came up with him” which means “who ascended and accompanied Jesus” “unto Jerusalem” or “to the city of Jerusalem which means set you double peace”. Mark shared how another “large group” of “women” accompanied Jesus when He came to “Jerusalem”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus had a large group of “women” who followed Him in addition to the disciples of Jesus. These women attended to Him as He ministered. God the Father wants every person, whether male or female, to “follow” Him by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who are wise will not only receive Him, but also discover ways to minister to Him in His Kingdom.
Next time Mark shares about, “the day before the sabbath”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
