Jesus Teaching in the Temple Daily - Mark 14:49

Mark wrote how there, “came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?”, and in chapter fourteen and verse forty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “I was daily with you in the temple teaching”, where we read:

I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

The verse reads, “I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not:”. Mark began with the word, “I was daily with you” which means “Jesus was day by day alongside the people who came to arrest Him” “in the temple” or “within the sacred place of worship in Jerusalem” “teaching” which means “giving instructions and didactic discourses”, “and you took me not” or “and the arresting people did not seize or capture Him”. Mark shared how Jesus reminded His assailants that He was “instructing people” every day in the “temple” in Jerusalem, and he noted how they did not “arrest” Him there.

The verse continues, “but the scriptures must be fulfilled. Mark added the words, “but the scriptures” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover the Holy Writ and certain portions of the Holy Scripture” “must be fulfilled” or “in order to have the prophesies in scriptures completed, furnished and supplied”. Mark shared how Jesus knew each of the “holy scriptures” concerning this time needed to be completed.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus challenged His assailants because He was continually, day by day, “teaching” them in the “sacred worship” place in Jerusalem and they never attempted to “seize” Him there. Jesus knew the “scriptures” needed to be “fulfilled” as they were written, and this was a portion of things written concerning Jesus that were going as prophesied. (See Psalm 22). God loves people and wants them to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. Scriptures were “fulfilled” concerning Him, and those who are wise will search the “word of God” to discover how Jesus is the “Christ and Messiah” of God.

Next time Mark shares how “they all forsook him, and fled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
