Luke the physician wrote how Joseph and Mary, “went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why have you thus dealt with us? behold, your father and I have sought you sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me? did you not know that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them”, and in chapter two and verse fifty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “went down with them, and came to Nazareth” where we read:
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them:
but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
The verse reads, “And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them:” Luke began with the words, “and he went down with them” or “and Jesus descended from the city of Jerusalem” “and came” which means “and entered and appeared” “to Nazareth” which refers to “toward Nazareth that means the guarded one and was the ordinary residence and home town of Christ”, “and was subject unto them” or “and was subordinate and arranged under Joseph and Mary”. Luke shared how Jesus submitted to His earthly parents and went back to His “residence” in the town of “Nazareth”.
The verse goes on to say, “but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” Luke continued with the words, “but his mother” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and Jesus' direct female progenitor and ancestor” “kept all these sayings” or “watched carefully and observed strictly each and every one of the utterances, declarations and proclamations of Jesus” “in her heart” which means “within Mary's soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”. Luke shared how “Mary” observed all the “utterances and declarations” made by Jesus within her soul.
When think through Luke's words in this verse, we see not only the “submission” of Jesus to His “earthly parents”, but also how Mary “kept” all Jesus' “sayings” within her deepest “soul and mind”. All these events are part of God's salvation plan for mankind, and because Jesus and His earthly parents followed all these details, people who put their faith and trust in Jesus may be forgiven of their sins and live forever with God. Those who are wise examine each part of this story and discover Jesus is the Son of God and “Savior” of the world.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “increased in wisdom and stature”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
