The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry, and they which were with him? How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”, and in chapter six and verse six of his book Luke shares how, “there was a man whose right hand is withered” where we read:
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught:
and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
The verse reads, “And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught:” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence” “also on another sabbath” which means “even so and indeed upon an other seventh day of the week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”, “that he entered” or “that Jesus went into, arose and made entrance” “into the synagogue” which means “into the sacred worship place where an assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures” “and taught” or “and held discourses, delivered didactic discourses, imparted instruction and instilled doctrine”. Luke shared how Jesus again went into the “sacred worship place” and began to “impart instruction and instill doctrine”.
The verse continues, “and there was a man whose right hand was withered.” Luke added the words, “and there was a man” which means “and there was present a male human being within the crowd of people in the synagogue” “whose right hand” or “that even so and indeed possessed a physical hand on his right side which” “was withered” which means “was shrunk, deprived of it's natural juices and wasted”. Luke shared how a man who had a “shrunken and wasted” “right hand” was in the group of people who were gathered in the “synagogue”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we notice how he focused on this man with a “shrunken right hand” within the synagogue . This man was the most physically needy within the assembly, and we shall see why Luke noted him. Jesus ministered to the “most needy” person wherever He went, and because God knows the physical and spiritual needs of everyone, He sent His Son Jesus to the earth to minister to them all. We shall learn more about this man in our next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know that God knows every need, and regardless of how difficult they may seem, He is more than capable to meet every one of them.
Next time Luke shares how, “the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
