The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus, “lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh. Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven” where we read:
Rejoice you in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven:
for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
The verse reads, “Rejoice you in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven:” Luke began with the words, “Rejoice you” or “be glad, well, thrive and be well” “in that day” which means “in that particular time”, “and leap for joy” or “and jump in happiness”: “for, behold” which means “because look, lo and see” “your reward is great” or “those who are hated, separated, reproached and whose name is expelled as evil for Jesus' cause have huge, massive and abundant wages, hire and fruit resulting from toil” “in heaven” which refers to “within region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how Jesus said people who are hated, separated, reproached and have their names expelled as evil for Jesus' cause will receive a “massive and abundant” wage for their toils in “heaven”.
The verse continues, “for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.” Luke added the words, “for in the like manner” which means “because, since and on account that in the same way and likeness” “did their fathers” or “performed, produced and constructed the ancestors and generators” “unto the prophets” which means “to the ones who were moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what they received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples who are “reproached and spoken evil of” by people who oppose them relate to the way their ancestors treated the “prophets” of old.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn more of what Jesus said to the people who were gathered on the “plain”. He told His disciples they should “rejoice” and “jump for joy” when they were “reproached and spoken evil of” because they would receive a “huge reward in heaven” for their difficulties. He told them they were like the “prophets” of old who suffered for their work in God's Kingdom, and because God loves His “servants”, they do not go without God seeing their every pain. God wants all people to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, they may suffer “persecution” for it, but they shall receive everlasting rewards that go on forever and ever.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “woe unto you that are rich”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
