Devils Cast into Swine - Luke 8:33

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high? I beseech you, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is your name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared, “then went the devils out of the man” where we read:

Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine:

and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

The verse reads, “Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine:” Luke began with the words, “then went the devils” or “at that time departed the evil, unclean spirits” “out of the man” which means “separated from the man who was possessed”, “and entered into the swine” or “and made entrance and went forth into the hogs or pigs”. Luke shared how the “demons” immediately departed from the man and “went into” the “hogs”.

The verse goes on to say, “and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.” Luke continued with the words “and the herd ran violently down” which means “and the drove of hogs ran down from and toward” “a steep place” or “a precipice, overhanging or cliff” “into the lake” which means “into the large body of water upon which Jesus and His disciples sailed”, “and were choked” or “and were suffocated and drowned”. Luke shared how the drove of hogs began “running” ferociously toward a “cliff”, fell of the edge and drowned in the “water” of the “lake” below.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover what the demons did as soon as Jesus gave them permission to go into the “drove of swine”. The “demons” possessed the “swine” which began running fiercely toward the edge of a cliff where they jumped off and drowned in the lake below. Jesus demonstrated His power to release people from the oppression of the “devil's power”, and although this man had a “Legion” of devils in Him, Jesus overpowered them all. God desires to free people from the bondage of sin through a relationship with His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive them and grant them everlasting life with Him.

Next time Luke shares how the people who, “saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
