Preaching and Healing Everywhere - Luke 9:6

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. And whatsoever house you enter into, there abide, and then depart. And whosoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city,

shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them”, and in chapter nine and verse six of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples went out, “preaching the gospel, and healing every where” where we read:

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

The verse reads, “And they departed, and went through the towns, ... Luke began with the words, “and they departed” or “and Jesus' twelve disciples left and went forth”, “and went through the towns” which means “and passed to and through the villages, regions, habitations and dwelling places”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples departed as Jesus instructed, and traveled through “towns and villages” in the country.

The verse goes on to say, “... preaching the gospel, and healing every where.” Luke continued with the words, “preaching the gospel” which means “heralding, proclaiming, evangelizing and bringing the good news and glad tidings of the Kingdom of God”, “and healing everywhere” or “and curing, restoring back to health and relieving people of maladies in each, every, the whole and every place they went”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples obeyed His direction to go and “herald” the “good news” of God's Kingdom while “restoring” people's health as they traveled.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples were on their training mission, and they obeyed His direction to “preach the gospel” of the Kingdom of God and to “heal” people as they went. God loves people to be involved in what He is doing in the world, and when they submit themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will assign them to activities that fulfill His plan and mission for His Kingdom.

Next time Luke shares how, “Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
