Take Nothing for Your Journey - Luke 9:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick”, and in chapter nine and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “take nothing for your journey” where we read:

And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey,

neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

The verse reads,And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, ... Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “take nothing” which means “do not carry or bring one thing” “for your journey” or “along the twelve disciples' travels and way”. Luke shared how Jesus told His twelve disciples not to carry anything with them for their travels.

The verse continues, “... neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. Luke added the words, “neither staves” which means “not any walking sticks or rods”, “nor script” or “not a wallet or leather sack in which travelers and shepherds carried their provision”, “neither bread” which means “not any flour mixed with water and baked”, “neither money” or “not any shekels or silver coins”; “neither have two coats apiece” which means “nor were the apostles to take with them two outer garments, tunics or vestments”. Luke shared how Jesus gave specific instructions concerning which included not taking any “walking sticks, wallets, food, shekels or two outer garments”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn more specific instructions given by Jesus to His “twelve disciples”. They were not to take any physical “provisions” with them on their journey as they would learn to be dependent upon God for all their needs. Jesus desires to have people following Him who understand everything they need will be provided as they minister even as Paul the apostle wrote, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (See Philippians 4:13) Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus to be their personal “Savior and Lord” and learn to depend upon the Lord for everything they need.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus told His disciples, “whatsoever house you enter, there abide, and then depart”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
