The Man is His Right Mind - Luke 8:35

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus encountered a man who said his name was “Legion” because He had many devils, and after Jesus told them to leave the man to enter swine, “then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how the people who were told about Jesus casting out the devils, “found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind” where we read:

Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

The verse reads, “Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, …” Luke began with the words, “then they went out” or “at that time the people of the city, town and neighboring hamlet left and departed their areas” “to see what was done” which means “to observe, perceive and become acquainted with what happened with the swine”; “and came to Jesus” or “and arose and appeared to the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “and found the man” which means “and discovered, detected and perceived the man who was possessed with Legion”, “out of whom the devils” or “from whom the evil or unclean spirits” “were departed” which means “left, were expelled and cast out”. Luke shared how the people went out of their “city” to find out to discover the formerly “demon possessed” man now cleansed from the “evil spirits”.

The verse goes on to say, “... sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.” Luke continued with the words “sitting at the feet of Jesus” which means “seated at Jesus' physical feet”, “clothed” or “dressed with garments and outerwear”, “and in his right mind” which means “and the man was exercising self control with a sound and right mind”: “and they were afraid” or “and the people of the city were terrified, in fear, seized with alarm and amazement”. Luke shared how the people of the city discovered the formerly “demon possessed” man now “clothed” and with a “sound mind” which caused the people to be “in fear and amazement” concerning Jesus.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the people of the city were curious as to what happened to the demon possessed man. To their amazement, the once wild and atrocious man was seated at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind. Jesus healed this man, and all the people wondered about Jesus as this demonstration of His power was now very evident to them. God desires to show His power to forgive sins through His Son Jesus, and when a person believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He not only will forgive and cleanse them, but He will also make them whole.

Next time Luke shares how the people who, “saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
