A Man with Two Sons - Luke 15:11

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them. And he spoke this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, does not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and her neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents”, and in chapter fifteen and verse eleven of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said, “a certain man had two sons” where we read:

And he said, A certain man had two sons:

The verse reads, “And he said, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he” or “and Jesus” “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus continued to share with the crowd who was listening to Him by declaring the following words.

The verse continues, “... A certain man had two sons:” Luke added the words, “a certain man” or “a particular male human being” “had two sons” which means “possessed two male progeny and immediate descendants”. Luke shared how Jesus began to speak about a “particular man” who possessed “two sons”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the beginning of another story Jesus will relay to the crowd of people who were listening to Him. Jesus will tell one of the greatest stories that has ever been told concerning a “lost son”. As we learn from Him, we may know God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who believe and trust in Him will find He is willing and able to change their lives and provide them with a more abundant life. (See John 10:10)

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how the younger son says, “Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
