Give Me My Portion - Luke 15:12

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twelve of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the younger son said, “Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me” where we read:

And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.

And he divided unto them his living.

The verse reads, “And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.” Luke began with the words, “and the younger of them” or “and the most recently born and youthful of the two sons” “said to his father” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the younger son's progenitor and immediate male ancestor”, “Father” or “dad, progenitor and male life giver”, “give me the portion of goods” which means “grant and bestow to me, your younger son, the lot, part and particular piece of the estate, property and possessions” “that falls to me” or “that is to be cast, laid upon and inherited by the younger son”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “younger” of the two sons went to his “father” and asked him for the “inheritance” that was due to him.

The verse goes on to say, “ And he divided unto them his living.” Luke continued with the words, “and he divided unto them” or “and the father separated and distributed to the sons” “his living” which means “the father's wealth, resources and goods”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “father” distributed his “goods” to his sons at the younger son's request.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “younger” of the “two sons” desired to have his “inheritance” given to him prior to his father's death. Because a first son would usually receive a “double portion” of the “father's goods” upon the death of their “father”, this son wanted his part immediately. There are many who only think about having funds for the “immediate” situation, and they are willing to receive whatever is given to them so they may “squander it” in any manner they desire. Life is precious, and every person is dearly loved by God. His desire is to save them from their sins through His Son Jesus so they may have an eternal relationship with Him. Those who are wise will think about their “everlasting” inheritance and allow God to decide when they should receive anything else.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the younger son, “wasted his substance with riotous living”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
