Bring the Best Robe and Ring - Luke 15:22

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-two of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the father declared, “Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand” where we read:

But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him;

and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

The verse reads, “But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; Luke began with the words, “but the father said” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the male progenitor and immediate ancestor uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to his servants” which means “to the father's slaves, men of servile condition and wage earners”, “bring forth the best robe” or “carry and bear forth the loose outer garment which is first in honor, influence and rank and extends to the feet. It is usually worn by kings, priests and persons of rank”, “and put it on him” which means “and place and set the best robe upon the younger son”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “father” instructed his men of servile condition to “bring” his “best” outer garment of honor and influence”.

The verse goes on to say “and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:” Luke continued with the words, “and put a ring” or “and place a finger-ring” “on his hand” which means “upon the younger son's physical hand”, “and shoes on his feet” or “and sandals which were soles fastened to the foot with thongs upon the younger son's physical feet”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “father” also instructed his “servants” to put a “ring” upon his younger son's finger and “sandals” upon his feet.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “father” honored his younger son who returned home. Rather than chastising him or ridiculing him for squandering all his goods, this “father” clothed his son with the “best” garment, put a “signet” “ring” upon his finger and shod him with honorable shoes. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their life to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He welcomes them, honors them and will clothe them in His righteousness which shall last for all eternity.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the father said, “bring here the fated calf, and kill it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
