The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him”, and in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-one of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the son declared, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight” where we read:
And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight,
and am no more worthy to be called your son.
The verse reads, “And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, ...” Luke began with the words, “and the son” or “and the younger male progeny and offspring” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to his father”, “Father” or “male progenitor and immediate ancestor or dad”, “I have sinned against heaven” which means “i, the younger son, have erred and been mistaken and wrong towards and opposition to the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”, “and in your sight” or “and within your, the father's, presence and eyes”. Luke shared how Jesus said the younger son told his father how he “sinned” toward “heaven” and before his “eyes”.
The verse continues “... and am no more worthy to be called your son.” Luke added the words, “and am no more worthy” or “and am no longer or further befitting, congruous and merited” “to be called your son” which means “to receive the name of and saluted as the father's male progeny and offspring”. Luke shared how Jesus said the younger son told his “father” he was no longer “befitting' to be named as his “son”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the younger son “spoke” his thoughts to his “father”. In other words, he took action by telling his father what he was thinking. It is one thing to have “thoughts” about doing or saying something, and quite another to actually “act” upon those impulses. God loves people to come to Him through His Son Jesus, and as Paul the apostle wrote, “if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (See Romans 10:9-10) Those who are wise will not only have “thoughts” toward confessing to God, but also act upon them like this younger son.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus said the father instructed, “Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his fee”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
