The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, ...”, and in chapter fifteen and verse nineteen of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said the son declared he is, “no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants” where we read:
And am no more worthy to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants.
The verse reads, “And am no more worthy to be called your son:” Luke began with the words, “and am no more worthy” or “and exist as no longer befitting, congruous and merited” “to be called your son” which means “to receive the name of the father's male progeny or offspring”. Luke shared how Jesus said the younger son determined to tell his “father” he no longer “merited” being named as his “son”.
The verse continues, “make me as one of your hired servants.” Luke added the words, “make me as one” or “render and appoint me, the younger son, like and similar to a single one” “of your hired servants” which means “as your waged earners or men of servile condition”. Luke shared how Jesus said the younger son would request that his father appoint him to be as one of his “wage earners”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see the humility fashioned within this son. Because this younger son now had nothing and came to his senses, he desired only to be as a “wage earner” within his father's household. He decided to turn back to his home, admit his wrong to his father and tell him how he was not merited that he be known as his father's son. The younger son only desired to be given the opportunity to be his father's “slave”. This is a true humility brought on by the poor conditions endured by this younger son, and God Himself will often allow a person to get to the very bottom before they recognize their need for Him and His Son Jesus. Wherever a person finds themselves on top of the world or in the lowest valley, God desires them to “come” to Him with a humble heart and allow Him to make them whole.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the son, “arose, and came to his father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
