Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew near unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how the two disciples, “eyes were opened, and they knew him” where we read:
And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
The verse reads, “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him;” Luke began with the words, “and their eyes were opened” or “and the two disciples' physical and spiritual eyes were roused, caused them to understand and opened thoroughly”, “and they knew him” which means “and the two disciples perceived, noticed, were acquainted with and recognized Jesus”. Luke shared how the two disciples had their “eyes opened” and they recognized Jesus.
The verse continues, “and he vanished out of their sight.” Luke added the words, “and he vanished” which means “and Jesus was taken away and made invisible” “out of their sight” or “from the two disciples vision and senses”. Luke shared how Jesus became “invisible” to the two disciples after they understood who He was.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “breaking of bread” by Jesus “opened the eyes” of the two disciples. Even though Jesus was explaining the scriptures written about Himself, the two disciples did not know who He was. God revealed His Son Jesus to them, and they were able to understand and be excited about what they saw. God wants to reveal Himself to every person through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Lord and Savior”, He not only will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life, but will be with them in every circumstance they encounter in life.
Next time Luke shares how the two disciples say, “did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
